Fashion designer Jason Wu, perhaps best known for his striking pieces worn by none-other-than former First Lady Michelle Obama, is proving that his design skills don't stop on the runway.
Wu recently collaborated with custom furniture brand, Interior Define (ID), to create a furniture collection, marking his foray into interiors. After two years of ideating, designing, and then production, the luxe pieces are now available online and at ID brick and mortar stores in Chicago, New York, Austin, San Francisco, and Boston, with prices ranging from just under $500 to over $4000.
"What I'm hoping to achieve with this collection is to be able to not only outfit the Jason Wu woman but to outfit her home," Wu says in a video about the line. "It feels really holistic for me," he continues.
The collection includes chairs, sofas, sectionals, and ottomans with exposed wood frames (a first for the furniture brand) in a variety of colors and fabrics. Inspired by the ever-popular midcentury modern design style, the pieces are timeless and sleek—exactly what you would expect from the talented designer.
"I wanted a slight reference to one of my favorite eras—the 40s and 50s—with a modern spin," Wu explains. "With this collaboration, I wanted to create a new classic...It's modern, it's durable, it's beautifully crafted and well-considered with every detail. It really fits within my design philosophy," the designer adds.
Interior Define was the perfect brand to introduce Wu's vision to the world of home decor—an industry the designer has dipped his toe into before, but never fully committed to. He was initially attracted to ID because of their modern approach to affordable luxury furnishings as well as their dedication to customization.
"What I love about Interior Define and what we’re doing together is that there’s a real point of view—there’s a lot of generic furniture out there, but we are creating something that really represents a distinct design philosophy," he points out. Because customers can choose from an array of over 65 fabrics, matte black or oiled walnut legs, and even sofa size and chaise length, each piece is entirely personalized.
"It's never a one-size-fits-all," the designer says. "I love the idea that I can create something, yet the customer can expand on it and create their own version of what we started," he continues. According to Wu, this is something that young professionals in his age group are craving.
"I look at a lot of my friends who are in their 30s—they are looking for... a new classic, one that isn't disposable and has a sense of quality," he says. "I think we attained that in this new collection."
