Jennifer Lopez appears to be on top of the world. She's at the helm of three major television shows and taking center stage in her own Vegas show, all while spending time with boyfriend Alex Rodriguez and her twins Emme and Maximilian. However, like most women both in Hollywood and elsewhere, she is not without her own #MeToo stories, which have turned the entertainment industry on its head in light of this past year's Time's Up movement. The star recently opened up to Harper's Bazaar about her experiences with misconduct in the industry and what it takes to keep moving forward.
"I haven't been abused in the way some women have. But have I been told by a director to take off my shirt and show my boobs? Yes, I have. But did I do it? No, I did not," Lopez told the magazine. Her story echoes those of so many others who have faced mistreatment but weren't sure how to address it at the moment. "When I did speak up, I was terrified. … It was one of my first movies. But in my mind, I knew the behavior wasn't right."
Lopez's story is evidence of the many layers of sexual harassment, abuse, and misconduct that infiltrate almost all industries. "It could have gone either way for me. But I think ultimately the Bronx in me was like, 'Nah, we're not having it.'"
Now, the crazy-successful singer, dancer, actress, and producer focuses on positive affirmations in her daily life. "I am youthful and timeless. I tell myself that every day, a few times a day." In addition to her inspirational mantras, she also reveals to Harper's Bazaar that her happiness has a lot to do with knowing exactly who she is and what she deserves.
"I know who I am and what I want. I also know my strengths and weaknesses. It took me a long time to get to a point where I could say something nice about myself. I'm glad I can do that now." Lopez's positive attitude is a testament to what standing up for and believing in yourself can create.
