Puerto Rico is currently facing what many are calling a humanitarian crisis after Hurricane Maria devastated the island just a few days ago. While many grapple with how to handle the situation, Jennifer Lopez is taking action. ABC News reports that the singer, actress, and dancer announced she'll donate $1 million to hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
Hurricane Maria swept through the territory just after Hurricane Irma affected Florida and parts of the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico. CNN reports that in the wake of multiple natural disasters, Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rosselló is emphasizing the fact that Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory with many American-citizen residents. "We need something tangible, a bill that actually answers to our need right now," said Rosselló.
Lopez's announcement is certainly a hopeful gesture toward greater relief efforts for Puerto Rico, which is currently experiencing a dire power outage across the entire island, among other obstacles. Lopez, who is of Puerto Rican descent, plans to use proceeds from her Las Vegas show to support charitable and nongovernmental organizations, according to statements she made in a press conference with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo last Sunday. Lopez added that she and her boyfriend, Alex Rodriguez, have been pooling their resources in entertainment and sports industries to do more.
"I will always be a New Yorker. I am a proud Puerto Rican," Lopez said.
