LinkedIn Has Spoken: Erase This Word From Your Profile to Get the Job

Résumés can be difficult to write, so it's understandable that many people look to a formula to perfect their own. Google offers more than 31 million results in response to the popular search query "how to write a résumé," but if you turn to a template, a new study by LinkedIn suggests you're making a common and potentially costly error.

The career network scanned its extensive database of job seeker profiles to uncover the 10 most overused and, as a result, underwhelming buzzwords of 2017. The list reads like a generic cover letter: Specialized took the number one spot, pushing leadership, last year's list-topper, to second place.

"Buzzwords are often used to seem knowledgeable when we're not confident talking about our professional achievements," explains LinkedIn career expert Blair Decembrele. "We've seen our peers use buzzwords and assume it's the right thing to do—we think they sound professional without giving much thought to what the word really means."

Erase these over-used buzzwords from your LinkedIn profile and résumé to stand out from other job hunters.
