Amazon Is Making a Lord of the Rings TV Series, and Fans Are Losing It

Just as HBO's Game of Thrones is poised to air its final season, Amazon has announced a huge deal that will see one of the most successful fantasy books and films transformed into a TV series. Yes, for real: JRR Tolkien's epic Lord of the Rings saga is coming to a television near you—well, sort of.

Amazon has confirmed the deal, but the series won't revisit the same storyline we've seen in the movies. Instead, it'll explore the events that took place before The Fellowship of the Ring. It's still unclear what the exact focus will be, but Entertainment Weekly suggests it will either take place before The Hobbit or between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

That's not all fans are excited about. Amazon's deal also includes a potential spinoff series, meaning the streaming platform will have creative license to create new storylines beyond the original books. "We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings," Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, said in a statement. "Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on JRR Tolkien's original writings."

There's no word about the cast and premiere date just yet, but one thing's for sure: This epic production is exactly what fantasy fans have been waiting for.
