Skip the Sauerkraut—This One Fruit Works as a Natural Probiotic

Let's be honest: A lot of the probiotic-rich foods aren't exactly the most palatable—you can only eat so much sauerkraut and kimchi before you start to feel sick. But one delicious, healthy, and tropical fruit is here to answer your gut health problems: mango

According to a new study published in the Journal of Nutrition, the juicy stone fruit can actually prevent the loss of good gut bacteria often induced by an unhealthy, high-fat diet. The researchers fed a group of 60 male rats mango powder for 12 weeks, which ultimately fed the "good" bacteria in their guts and stimulated short-chain fatty acid production (which fights inflammation). 

"Mango is a good source of fiber and has been reported in previous studies to have anti-obesogenic, hypoglycemic and immunomodulatory properties," said lead researcher Edralin A. Lucas, Ph.D., of the findings. "The results of this animal study showed that adding mango to the diet may help maintain and regulate gut health and levels of beneficial bacteria levels."
