"I feel like I envisioned my house before I knew it existed," says Mara Roszak of the home she shares with her husband, fellow hair stylist Alex Polillo. Roszak discovered the place in 2009, and knew it was "the one" from its romantic creeping-ivy-covered exterior: "I remember driving by Fred Segal when I was younger and seeing that landscaped facade--it's just a minor detail, but I've always loved it," she says. Of course the real estate crush only deepened when Roszak stepped inside: "It has these big open windows and the layout just flows really nicely," she says. "I approach my work the same way I approach my house--I just want things to sort of tie-in together." A few months after moving in, she met the other love of her life, Polillo, through a mutual friend and shared client. "It was hair-related," she admits.
DYNAMICALLY OPPOSED "I've always liked the idea of white walls and dark floors," says Roszak of her decision to keep the walls a pure hue and stain her hardwood floors. She made an exception for the Benjamin Moore Coffeehouse Chocolate-shaded walls of her bathroom, after being inspired by a room she saw in Elle Décor.
BASKET CASE It may appear that her taste favors simplicity, but Roszak has a penchant for stashing treasures in plain sight: The built-in bookcase is populated mostly by Goodwill curios, including a pair of brass giraffes, fashion coffee table books, and baskets from Crate and Barrel. "I probably do over-accessorize!" she confesses. "Alex is a lot more minimalist--clean lines, that kind of a thing." In the bedroom, Roszak showcases her enviable collection of shoes in a vintage lawyer's bookcase. "The idea of storage that is pretty really appeals to me," she says.
TRUE ROMANCE Furniture is unfussy and warm in tone--from the Croft House live edge reclaimed wood table to the pair of tufted leather and wood refurbished vintage chairs from Emmerson Troop. Interspersed within the neutral palette, romantic touches abound: the marble bust on the mantle (made by Roszak's mother), the brass swans that preen in the living room corner, the dramatic clawfoot bathtub, and Roszak's Chanel accent pillow. "The whole thing has to tell a story," she says.
