In addition to her thriving fashion label, Lauren Conrad is the co-founder of a growing global shop, The Little Market, which sells beautiful lifestyle accents, home décor, and fashion accessories made by artisans in developing nations. Today, Conrad gives us an exclusive first look at The Little Market’s new collection of serape blankets.
As we head into the final weeks of summer, The Little Market just added new blankets that can cross over from season to season. We discovered these serapes on our last trip to Mexico and knew that they would be a great part of our collection. The Little Market is a fair-trade shop that we created in order to bring beautiful, artisanal products to a broader audience. Each piece is handmade, and by supporting the artisans, you help preserve wonderful traditions that have been passed down over generations. Keep reading for our favorite ways to style these gorgeous pieces.
Serape is associated with the traditional striped weaving within the blanket. The design is woven into soft cotton using a handloom. The artisans hand-dye each fiber prior to weaving the pieces together, which results in the vibrant colors of each blanket. A large stripe serves as the main color, and smaller stripes add contrasting highlights.
We carry a variety of colors so you can find the perfect one for your needs, whether it’s a throw for a bed or a blanket for a picnic.
The serape blanket is a favorite of ours because it can easily be used indoors or outdoors. We love to use a serape blanket for a beach day or outdoor concert.
These blankets are handmade by the artisan group Camaxtli, which comprises 13 artisans in Tlaxcala, Mexico. The artisans weave the serape blankets using traditional techniques, and the designs originate from Saltillo. One of our favorite aspects of The Little Market is that artisans are able to create a sustainable source of income while preserving their cultural heritage.
