We all know Mindy Kaling for her chops as an actress, author, and comedienne. But if her newly decorated NoLIta apartment is any indication, The Mindy Project creator clearly has an eye for interior design, as well. Of course, Kaling didn't decorate the new space alone; she enlisted the expertise of designer Sally Gotfredson from The Studio at One Kings Lane to help bring her vision to life.
The end vibe? "Moroccan midcentury," said Gotfredson on the One Kings Lane blog. "Mindy wanted it to feel different than any of the other spaces she's lived in before. She's always gone for tons of color with layers of pattern, and this time she really wanted to push herself out of that comfort zone."
Kaling credits her father, an architect, for her penchant for midcentury décor. "My dad loves midcentury modern, and the house that we grew up in was furnished with a lot of pieces in the Danish midcentury style," she told OKL. "As I grew older I reacted to that. … Now, as a 37-year-old, I'm gravitating more toward my dad's style, and I think Sally really captured that in the vintage pieces she found."
Due to Kaling's busy schedule, the project was a bicoastal labor of love spanning several months. When it came time for the big reveal, she "got to be surprised, like in a reality television show," she gushed. "The first time I walked into the space after One Kings Lane designed it, I thought, Who is this chic person who lives here? I couldn't believe it, and I desperately didn't want to mess it up, because it's just so chic and clean."
