After years of our blind consumption, added and artificial sugars have finally been outed as the unhealthy ingredients that they are. But soda isn't the only beverage that's high in sugar and calories—as the Center for Science in the Public Interest reports, sugary drinks in general make up almost half of all the added sugar in the average American's diet. According to Health, the following three drinks are just as unhealthy as soda but aren't yet recognized for their alarmingly high sugar content:
Fruit juice: Despite their deceivingly healthy name, most of the fruit juices lining on your supermarket shelves are filled with sugar—even the ones labeled 100% fruit juice. "For instance, a cup of grape juice contains 36 grams of sugar—not far off from what you'll find in a can of lemon-lime soda, which racks up 44 grams," writes Health.
Hot cocoa: While more obvious than fruit juice, this post-snowball fight drink is more of a dessert than a snack, according to nutritionist Renee Clerkin. "A typical 16-ounce mug with whipped cream packs 400 calories and 43 grams of sugar—more than a can of cola."
Sweetened iced tea: While tea is definitely one of the healthier drink options, sweetened teas are full of syrupy sugars. "One popular brand has over 30 grams of added sugar in one bottle," writes Health. "Yep, that's more like dessert."
