Muji Is Selling Ready-Made Cabins So You Can Vacation Anywhere

Updated 04/05/18

Cult Japanese brand Muji has a knack for creating beautiful, practical home goods, and now, the company has announced it's extending its reach beyond accessories. The brand has unveiled plans for Muji Hut, a timber cabin that acts as an affordable ready-made vacation home.

"Who hasn't dreamt of living somewhere they really want to be? The tools to make that dream a reality are now available," the brand says on the Japanese version of its website. "It's not as dramatic as owning a house or a vacation home, but it's not as basic as going on a trip." Part of the cabin's appeal is its versatility: "Put it in the mountains, near the ocean, or in a garden, and it immediately blends in with the surroundings, inviting you to a whole new life," the brand continues.

There's good and bad news: The cabin will retail for a fraction of a typical property at $27,000, Trendland reports. This price includes materials as well as contractor fees for construction. Unfortunately, it's only available for purchase in Japan, and the company has not confirmed if it will be rolled out internationally.

The timber hut will measure just under 100 square feet. Cabins come with an extended porch and floor-to-ceiling windows to create a seamless flow between the interior and exterior.

The home is small but spacious, the brand says. It's designed to fit three to four people comfortably and has enough space for one full-size bed.

The structure is made from local wood, and the design is inspired by traditional Japanese shipbuilding. It sits on a raft foundation, much like an ordinary home.

Not based in Japan? Consider building a "dome home" to live out your off-the-grid dreams.
