The latest Netflix original TV series has arrived, and it may be more addictive than its subject, cocaine. The show is called Narcos and tells the story of Pablo Escobar’s rise to head of the Medellín drug cartel in Colombia in the 1970s and ’80s.
According to Business Insider, at the peak of his power, Escobar brought in an estimated $420 million a week. Yes, we said million. “The king of cocaine” had so much cash rolling in that he had to bury it in piles throughout Colombian farming fields. The series, inspired by these real events but fictionalized with Hollywood bravado, splices real news footage from the period between the violent, calculated, and charismatic scenes of Escobar, played by Wagner Moura. Directed by renowned Brazilian director José Padilha, the show was shot entirely in Colombia.
So what’s the verdict? Rotten Tomatoes gives Narcos a 76%. We think it’s absolutely irresistible. If you liked Blow, starring Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz, you’ll love this. Get ready for the weekend; we see a Netflix binge session in your near future.
