In the latest issue of Rue, designer Nate Berkus reveals the makeover he gave to the home of his longtime assistant, Kelly Engstrom. Engstrom and her husband have lived in the Brooklyn apartment since 2007, but aside from the nursery they put together when their daughter was born last year, they had spent little time updating the interior.
When Engstrom asked Berkus for his thoughts on a new sofa, the small change led to an entire overhaul. "Kelly really started the whole ball rolling without even knowing it," Berkus said. "When we went to look at a new sofa, that got me thinking about how bright and happy her home was, but I wanted it to feel more pulled together." Sourcing pieces from the designer's line at Target, vintage items from Chairish, and some high-impact paint and hardware updates, Berkus created a cozy but personal space for the young family.
