Rivaled only by National Pizza Day and Cinco de Mayo, National Taco Day is a celebration in its own right, despite being put on by an organization called the Party Excuses Network. Although the history behind this holiday may be questionable, people don't need much of an excuse to eat tacos, as evidenced by last year's success: Some 4.5 billion tacos were consumed on National Taco Day 2015, according to the official website. That's 490,000 miles worth of tacos, or the weight of two Empire State Buildings, for some added context.
As to be expected, many Mexican restaurants across the country are honoring the holiday appropriately, offering heavily discounted or free tacos. According to Uproxx, here are a few of the best deals offered today:
Del Taco, nationwide: Two free grilled chicken tacos after joining their Raving Fan eClub.
Moe’s Southwest Grill, nationwide: Free burrito with app download; use the coupon code EdwinGu3049 to get a limited-time offer when ordering via app.
Qdoba, nationwide: Free order of chips and salsa or free drink when you sign up for Qdoba Rewards.
On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina, nationwide: Fifty-cent chicken tinga and veggie mini-tacos at participating locations.
