From her impressive acting skills on Glee to her hit single "Sorry," we always knew Naya Rivera was an insanely talented artist. But we didn't know Rivera also had a hidden talent for decorating until we got a peek inside her incredibly stylish nursery. Aside from her next-level vocals, she also has an eye for design. With a little help from interior designer Angelo Surmelis, Rivera has mastered the nursery décor scheme that can easily transition from a baby room into a more grown-up teen bedroom.
Full of plush goodies and toys as well as whimsical artwork, Rivera's nursery is a dream come true for any kid. Plus, it has all the parenting essentials, like a changing table that's actually cool. And we have a feeling they will since the high-impact graphic prints and a chic, neutral color palette make this room the hippest bedroom ever. The best part is that it's all completely gender-neutral. Read through our three design tips and see the décor details for yourself. Then, shop the look for your own home.
Go for Graphics
As fun and playful as this nursery is, it also manages to be serene and comforting. Fun fact: The design of this entire room pivots around that amazing black-and-white striped teepee in the corner. "I actually was really inspired by the teepee and sort of built the room around that," Rivera tells MyDomaine. Not only is it eye-catching for design enthusiasts like ourselves, but it's also a dream come true for any kid as far as forts for playdates go.
We think staying within a tailored color palette is the key to decorating with bold items like this teepee as well as the other black-and-white striped pieces. That's why, to balance out the intensity of the bold graphics, Rivera decided to stay within a neutral color palette of black, white, cream, and gray. To make things comforting for a toddler, Rivera also included a pretty, floral motif carpet and plenty of plush toys.
Be Bold and Chic:
Mix Prints for Balance
We love how this nursery incorporates whimsical décor elements like a humorous painting, a unique lamb rocking chair, and a playful star motif tray. Indeed, these accents stimulate creativity, joy, and imagination, which is the perfect environment for a child. To balance out these kid-friendly pieces, the changing table is disguised as a handsome dresser and topped with a metallic tray. "Some of the pieces we got—like the changing table—are just great 'adult' pieces that can be moved to any room later down the line," she tells us. Since these items (and the traditional carpet) are classic enough to fit in with any style, they're great investments that will last far beyond the newborn and toddler days.
Be Whimsical and Timeless:
Store Toys in Style
A storage unit with open shelving, plenty of surface area, and a spacious drawer is the perfect piece for a playroom or kid's room. Not only does it allow you to display the prettier toys and stuffies for all to see (we love those playful bookends), but it also has enough space for cute baskets and bins that make cleanup a lot easier.
Pro tip: Stay extra organized by putting little labels on each basket so you know where to find everything when you're in a hurry or have guests coming over. We also love the way Rivera personalized this bookshelf with family photos in stylish frames. If you look closely, you can see Rivera's favorite object on the bookcase: the baby's ultrasound picture.
