Get Your Chill On—Here's Everything That's New on Netflix This August

Updated 04/30/19
New on Netflix August 2018

As the last full month of summer, August is often considered the time to soak up the best of the season before cooler temperatures arrive. Jump into a cool lake! Spend an afternoon at the beach! Eat as much carnival food as you can! But, let’s be honest: How much of that are you really going to do? Sometimes, a lazy afternoon in front of Netflix with a glass of wine can be as relaxing as a lounge chair on the shore, and that’s why we’re bringing you what’s new on Netflix this August, and what’s leaving this month.

A few noteworthy original films are debuting in August—including Like Father, starring Kristen Bell—as well as some beloved classics like Lord of the Rings and Steel Magnolias. And if you want to dive into a new series or two, there are other originals like Marching Orders and Follow This to check out. Other favorites, like Finding Dory and Adventures in Babysitting, are on their way out, so make time to watch them, too.

Here’s a full list of what’s joining the ranks on Netflix this August, and what’s leaving. Sure, you may swim in a pool or go to a barbecue before the month is over, but don’t feel guilty if this is where your real priorities stand. We don’t blame you.

Leonardo DiCaprio portrays billionaire Howard Hughes in this Academy Award–winning biopic as a determined, eccentric, and misunderstood icon of the 20th century. The film follows Hughes during his rise to fame between 1927 to 1947, as he builds a career as a film producer and pioneers advances in flight, all while working to hide his obsessive-compulsive disorder. There are also appearances by movie stars of the era, like Katharine Hepburn (played by Cate Blanchett) and Ava Gardner (played by Kate Beckinsale), if you’re in it simply for the glamour.
