Royal Refresh: The Major Design Trend You Never Saw Coming

Ye olde velvet tufts and jewel tones

Updated 02/27/17

Our latest design crush feels particularly timely with Valentine's Day just around the corner. Indeed, it involves plush fabrics in rich hues, elaborate forms, romantic motifs, and a complex label: "the new traditionalist." Though seemingly an oxymoron, it isn't as complicated as it sounds. Adopting the styles from the European Baroque and Rococo periods and blending them with contemporary trends, new traditionalism is a timeless style everyone will appreciate.

We're not the only ones looking toward Marie Antoinette for décor inspiration this season, either. As interior designer Justin DiPiero of Homepolish tells MyDomaine, a ton of decorators are "going back to our roots, if you will"—oh, we will. And as far as trends to look out for, he assures that "we can see a reemergence of velvet tufting, Louis-inspired shaped, and jewel tones." See some visual displays of the coolest, most romantic trend of 2017 below.

Tufted Velvet Furniture

Geometric in shape but regal in material, tufted velvet chairs are a success story for décor tradition mixing. Not to mention the velvet fabric and plush cushions make this chair the most comfortable yet stylish living room staple.

Aviva Stanoff Lace-Print Velvet Pillow $365

If you don't have the budget or living room space, opt for a fancy velvet pillow instead. For some extra formality, find one like the above that also features embroidery.

Standout Jewel Tones

The brutalist decorative object as well as the concrete dresser contrast with the chair's traditional shape and glitzy gold trimmings. But the true standout feature is that gorgeous blue jewel tone—and you can never go wrong with an all-white backdrop.

Consort Design Stilla Rose Pouf $600

A pale pink accent piece is the perfect way to soften things up in any décor scheme. Case in point? This sophisticated teardrop ottoman.

Moody Vignettes

This moodier take on the new traditionalist trend has just the right amount of edge to it. The bold materials and meticulous details are characteristics of the Baroque style, yet there's something about this corner that still feels so chic and du jour.

Vintage 3-Drawer Marble Dresser $1347

Even the littlest of details pack a lot of punch. We love the intricate hardware on this dresser.

Louis-Inspired Curves

Marie Antoinette has undoubtedly inspired her fair share of fashion trends. Even though several centuries (and revolutions) have come and gone since her reign, she's still a fashion influencer today. One of the most persistent characteristics is the use of curves evoking luxury and all things fancy.

Antique Embroidered Arm Chair $1400

This traditional form will instantly dress up your living room. Put it in a lackluster corner or by a console table in the entryway. It's the perfect occasional piece.
