When Oprah Winfrey, one of the world’s most powerful and influential figureheads, shares anything from recommended reading to motivational guidance, we listen. In a recent interview with Fast Company, the media mogul and spiritual powerhouse spoke out on the qualities she looks for in a team, as well as her own approach to career and happiness. Topping her must list for success? Laser focus and deep humility.
“I am aware that there is a finite amount of time and energy in every day,” said Winfrey. “So what is really important? What do you really want to do? Now I’m in a position where I only do what I want to do.” Winfrey went on to reveal she avoids meetings as often as possible, opting instead for detailed summaries from her staff.
Allocating her time exclusively to only the most worthy of tasks requires proper delegation. “I try to surround myself with people who really know what they’re doing and give them the freedom to do it,” said Winfrey.
Winfrey also believes the tricks to doing anything well are mindfulness and focused devotion: “I have learned that your full-on attention for any activity you choose to experience comes with a level of intensity and truth. It’s about living a present life, moment to moment—not worrying about what’s going to happen at 3 o’clock and what’s going to happen at 7 o’clock.” She added, “That whole thing about multitasking? That’s a joke for me. When I try to do that, I don’t do anything well.”
In addition to her wild generosity of spirit, what might be the most phenomenal quality of Winfrey’s is her continued ability to stay grounded despite her cultural icon status. The billionaire, philanthropist, and media empress cites gratitude and a rich, spiritual life as the driving forces behind her down-to-earth attitude.
“Through the grace of a force I call God,” said Winfrey. “I have been privileged to live this exquisitely inspired life. Daily, it continues to astound me that I’ve come from where I come from, and I am where I am. I feel that my role here on earth is to inspire people, and to get them to look at themselves. My genuine wish is to do better and be better to everybody. That’s not just some kind of talk for me. That’s who I am.”
