>As the days get shorter (and colder), it’s time to make the most of the summer, before it’s too late. To truly honor the closing of our favorite season, we suggest a stylish outdoor soirée, but not just any old get-together. This celebration needs to be special. Need inspiration? Take notes from the talented Bri Emery of DesignLoveFest, who worked with Joss & Main to design a chic backyard movie night for her friends.
>Inspired by Emery’s recent trip to Kyoto, Japan, the bohemian theme had a touch of the East. During her travels, she stayed in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn with tatami-matted rooms, dim lighting, a public bath house, low tables for dining, and sleeping mats. “We were all so fascinated by the feeling we had here,” she tells MyDomaine. “I wanted to achieve something similar and unique for our movie night. So we brought in a variety of Japanese snacks, custom sake glasses as takeaways, paper lanterns for the mood, and a bamboo bed with low seating all around.” Ahead, Emery shares some of her design inspiration and tips to host your own outdoor cinema.
Create a cozy setting with oversize outdoor poufs. Comfort is key. “Give people multiple areas to lounge,” Emery tells MyDomaine, “plenty of pillows and chairs and places where people can gather comfortably close to the screen or away from it near the snack table.”
A linen tablecloth adds an earthy feel to a boho-chic tablescape. And as for the menu? Emery says to keep things bite-size. Think mini soft pretzels with dipping sauces, hummus and veggies, popcorn with sea salt and rosemary, wine, sparkling water, and something sweet.
