At this point in our adult lives, we are all experts on what to pack should we ever be stuck on a deserted island. Maybe you would choose 10 albums or movies to take with you, regardless of the available technology that will play your discs or digital downloads. Curiously, no one ever thinks to take along toiletries or clothing, but what if we told you that you didn’t have to be stranded without basic amenities?
There are many tiny islands all over the world available to rent for your own private vacation. The most popular destinations tend to be in the Caribbean or in the Pacific near the equator, due to the predictably gorgeous weather. No matter where you go, expect to experience an intimate getaway as you explore the local surroundings and attractions. If an adventure is what you are after, there are ample excursions into nature or in the sea to explore. If you are more interested in serene pampering, take advantage of the spas and meditative options available at each destination.
Below explore five private islands to rent for your very own off-the-grid vacation.
Courtesy of Eustatia
Getting its name from the Greek term for “good place to stay,” Eustatia in the British Virgin Islands proves to be exactly that. The island will be reopened this December, for the first time since Hurricane Maria—just in time for the holiday season. The private island is famed for its water sports experiences, chef-prepared meals, and natural wildlife.

Nukutepipi will be the newest private island retreat in Tahiti when it opens next spring. The island is part of Sunset Luxury Villas, a private collection of destination retreats curated by Guy Laliberté, co-founder of Cirque du Soleil among other endeavors. Land- and water-pursuits abound, including snorkeling, diving, paddle boarding, lagoon tours, tennis, beach volleyball, biking, bird watching, star-gazing, and swimming with humpback whales (seasonal).

Guana Island, the historic private-island resort in the heart of the British Virgin Islands, has also undergone a comprehensive restoration, including expanding Guana’s renowned organic orchard and upgrading the island’s infrastructure—a mundane yet essential part of any destination. Like its cousin Eustatia, the local cuisine is revered; the brochure even invites guests to join its chefs in the kitchen.
Coco Privé is one of the most sought-after destinations for celebrities, billionaires, and royalty, featuring a private beach, master residence, and five guest villas floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean in the Maldives. There’s nowhere else anywhere on earth quite like it; just about everything is at your disposal when exploring the island.

Sir Richard Branson lays claim to Necker Island, but as with most of his other ventures, he wants other people to experience it for themselves. This exclusive private island resort is set to continue its “Celebration Weeks” through November. This special package allows visitors to book individual rooms while experiencing the island as if it were all to themselves.
