Contrary to what a certain Christian Grey might believe, a red room doesn't usually inflict pain. Yes, the color symbolizes love and passion, but it also has surprising psychological effects: It can energize and excite its inhabitants and even enhance their metabolism (anyone else ready to paint their kitchen cabinets a bright crimson?). Shades of red dominated the NYFW runways this month, but it appears the fiery hue is also trending in interiors everywhere—and for good reason. We could all use a little extra energy, courage, and love these days.

Luckily, these are all psychological effects of the color red.

While this mood-altering hue may not be the best paint color to introduce in your bedroom if you want to sleep at night, it might be exactly the energy boost you need in your home office or kitchen. Ready to fire up your space, just in time for Valentine's Day? These red paint colors are dominating trend reports this year—and they're already giving us wings.

Blood Orange

Sherwin-Williams Rave Red $31

Rave Red is one of Sherwin-Williams's colors of the year, and a slightly muted version of a bright firetruck red. This color is great for stimulating passion while remaining elegant. Try it on the bottom half of your wall only for a modern look.

Serena & Lily Cranberry $48

This fruity paint color from Serena & Lily is the brightest and cheeriest hue of the palette. Use it in a high-energy space, like on kitchen cabinets.

Hot Sauce

Behr Hot and Spicy $29

This spicy shade may look like the color that would come out of a hot sauce bottle—but it's also a lovely, warm, and light red that borders on a dark dusty rose.

Sherwin-Williams Emotional $31

A cross between a light red and a dark orange, this tone also reminds us of a tasty rosée sauce—this mild red hue will warm up any cozy space.

Sherwin-Williams Coral Island $31

Dusty rose is another trending color for 2017—and Sherwin-Williams's favorite is this a warm, muted pink that's just a few shades lighter than a deep red brick color.

Behr Everything's Rosy $28

Behr's rosy color is the perfect eraser pink and a wonderful hue that's a little calmer and more subdued than a bright red statement. Try it if you're only testing the waters of bright colors.

Raspberry Jam

Farrow & Ball Rectory Red $99

This Farrow & Ball classic is a welcoming rich crimson red with endless depth and flair. Use it in a sophisticated space—it's guaranteed to leave an impression.

Benjamin Moore Dinner Party $37

One of Benjamin Moore's trending colors for 2017, Dinner Party is deep and dramatic. Just like the name suggests, it's an ideal color for the dining room—especially when used in a high lacquer, for extra luxe.

Burgundy Wine

Benjamin Moore Dark Burgundy $37

This deep burgundy color is warm and fearless—try using it on the ceiling, as well, for a full cocoon effect. Best enjoyed with a glass of French red wine.

Sherwin-Williams Mature Grape $31

This deep purple stimulates imagination while calming the mind, making it a great choice for a cozy home office or library. Try it on built-in bookshelves for a high-end look.
