Out of all of the different types of wine, red probably garners the highest number of questions. How long does a bottle of merlot last once you've opened it? How can you tell if your bottle of red has gone bad? How should you store red wine to extend the life of it? Fortunately, this handy infographic from WineFolly's Madeline Buckette answers all of our wine-related questions (in an aesthetically pleasing way, no less).
A bottle of red wine will last anywhere from three to five days after being opened, and it should always be stored in a cool, dark place with a cork. "The more tannin and acidity the red wine has, the longer it tends to last after opening," explains Buckette. "So, a light red with very little tannin, such as Pinot Noir, won’t last open as long as a rich red like Petite Sirah."
If it's summertime and hot outside, Buckette recommends storing open reds in a wine chiller or in your fridge. "If you don't have a chiller, your fridge is better than letting the wine sit out in a 70°F room," she adds. As for when red wine has officially gone bad, look out for a musty, moldy smell; an oddly sweet taste; or a brownish hue. A slightly dislodged cork can also be a sign that it's time to toss it; the wine has likely overheated and expanded within the bottle.
