Although preferring one color instead of another may seem totally subjective, a large study conducted by papermaker G.F. Smith with the University of Sussex proves otherwise. The authors of the study found that greens and blues were the most popular colors overall, and after further analysis, were able to pinpoint an explanation for this trend. When people look at these colors—specifically navy blue—their heart rate physically lowers, creating a feeling of calm and relaxation, Mindbodygreen reports.

To come to this conclusion, researchers began by polling more than 26,000 participants from 100 countries about their favorite colors over a four-month period in 2017. Participants submitted their favorite color, as well as an explanation for why they believed they were drawn to the specific hue. Although the results included just about every color imaginable, it was blues and greens that came out on top, with a shade of blueish green called Marrs Green earning the title of world's favorite color.

This isn't exactly surprising, considering that one of the first color surveys ever conducted back in 1893 at the Chicago World's Fair also found that blue was the favorite color of respondents, MBG points out.

After discovering that a majority of participants had an affinity for shades of blue and green, researchers dove deeper into their analysis to find out why that may be. Professor of psychology at the University of Sussex, Anna Franklin, one of the authors of the study, notes that many studies have investigated the link between color and emotion.

"First, the more saturated the color is, the more it is associated with excitement and stimulation," she says. "Second, the lighter the color, the more it is associated with calmness and relaxation," the professor continues. According to her, many studies have also found that blue and green, specifically, are associated with feeling calm and relaxed.
