jl1 Swapping out an area rug will instantly give any room a new look. Try a subtle pattern for added interest. Rhodos White Rug, $612, HD Buttercup
paint Re-painting your walls is like a facelift for your room. Start the new year fresh with an updated, muted-neutral color palette. Try wallpaper on an accent wall to coordinate with your new paint. Skinny Dip, From $8, Jeff Lewis Color
jl6 As an alternative to plain drywall, add texture with wood paneling for a richer look. I had a craftsman install it in a recent project for this very reason. Paint or stain the paneling for a traditional or transitional aesthetic. Nomad Maple Wood Paneling, $25, Design the Space
jl5 Light fixtures are like the jewelry of a home. Buy a new table lamp, floor lamp, or replace an existing chandelier with something that makes a statement. I try to find unique vintage pieces. I like to have something in my home that can't be duplicated. Vintage Pendant, $1695, Jayson Home
jl3 Air vent grilles can be one of the most overlooked items in a house. Most people choose basic white vents. Install custom patterned grilles in an interesting finish for a richer, more polished look. Custom Grill, Price Upon Request, AA Grilles
jl4 A new set of drapery panels and hardware is a worthwhile investment. Spend the extra money to have a professional measure and install custom drapes to fit your windows. Flat Roman Shade, From $154, The Shade Store
jl5 Paint your cabinets a new color and replace the cabinet hardware in the process. It will look like you installed new cabinets without the added expense. Burfiend Drawer Pull, $10, Mockett
jl3 If you're installing marble floors, create a custom pattern for your fabricator to give your floors a more dramatic look. Mink Classic Polished Marble tile, Price Upon Request, Country Floors
jl2 While renovating a kitchen or bathroom, have your cabinet maker bid custom cabinetry in your closet. For a little more money than a pre-fab closet company, you can have a custom-built space to display your clothes and accessories like a retail store. Custom Closet, Price Upon Request, California Closets
JL1 Opt for a different kind of accent wall and lend your space a feeling of age with a reclaimed brick installation. We used 100-year-old brick to make this accent wall appear like it had always been there. The installer even applied a messy mortar finish to make the install look more authentic. Chicago Antique Thin Brick Veneer Tile, $10, Vintage Brick Salvage
