7 Secrets to Help You Save at Your Favorite Coffee Shop

I am one of those people who starts the day with a morning coffee. I’m not picky about where it’s from—Peet’s, Starbucks, the corner store downstairs, wherever—as long as I get my daily double espresso cappuccino, I’m a happy camper. However, spending $3+ a day on coffee certainly adds up. I’ve recently wondered how I can save on coffee, so when I came across a WKYC story about how to save at Starbucks, I couldn’t help but click. Reporter Matt Granite says the most obvious way to save on coffee is to not drink any at all. But he acknowledges that most of us aren’t going to give up a morning caffeine fix and provides tips for saving at your local coffee shop. Here they are.

  1. Buy a coffee machine and make coffee at home. Although the initial expense is more than the daily cost for coffee, in the long run, you will be saving.
  2. Ask for light ice. There is surprisingly almost no volume difference between a medium and large iced coffee order. You’re getting the same amount of liquid but paying more for the drink. What fills up the glass? Ice.
  3. Buy a discount card. You may have to do a little digging, but most coffee shops have some sort of discount card program in place. Whether it’s a buy nine and get the 10th free at your favorite mom-and-pop coffeeshop or Starbucks' use-and-reload cards, find the discount and make sure you get it.
  4. Consider the free shaker flavors. Instead of paying for a shot of chocolate flavoring, use the free chocolate powder to flavor your drink. This also goes for milk drinkers. Instead of ordering an iced latte, get an iced espresso and fill it with the free milk that’s at every coffeeshop counter in America.
  5. Bring your own mug. Most coffee shops offer a small discount—at Starbucks, it’s 10 cents when you bring in your own reusable mug. Sure it’s only 10 cents, but if you go every day, the savings will add up.
  6. Follow them on social media. Follow Peet’s on Twitter and like your local coffeeshop on Facebook. The company will share additional deals and discounts with followers.
  7. Make friends with the barista. If you order the same coffee from the same person every morning, treat them with respect and kindness. Know their name. You’d be surprised at how often they will treat you to a free coffee.

To jumpstart your coffee saving plan, invest in a reusable glass coffee cup.
