This Modern Scandinavian Remodel Boasts Clean Lines and Streamlined Design

For lovers of simplicity and minimalism, Scandinavian design will forever be the pinnacle of good taste. So when a Canadian couple made over their classic midcentury split-level Seattle rambler, "classic Scandinavian was the clear directive from the start," notes designer Lisa Staton. "We wanted to stay true to the home's midcentury origins but added a clean, airy, and open Scandi modern vibe," she explains. Staton, who describes her design style as clean, edited, and classic, uses modern details with layers of vintage and found objects to add warmth, depth, and texture. For this Scandinavian remodel, she layered brass and stainless accents on finishes in rhythms of black, bleached wood, and white and brought in natural wood, neutral, and textural furnishings. The result is a calm, airy space defined by clean lines and curated pieces that reflect the archetypal Scandinavian look.

"The home was fully gutted and renovated with the great room and kitchen a full, new addition," recounts Staton. She explains that the key to this new addition is the vaulted ceiling and skylights as well as the floor-to-ceiling windows and doors.

Staton says the biggest challenge of this project was "keeping things as light and open as possible—also allowing for the TV but not visually letting it dominate the room."

"We choose to layer with textures rather than color," notes Staton, citing the Moroccan rug, linen gray sectional, and braided jute poufs as adding to these layers.

"We wanted it to feel open, airy, comfy, and relaxing," says Staton.

To keep the space "clean and crisp with a place for everything and minimal clutter," Staton installed clean cabinets with no hardware and flat-touch latch doors.

The first things Staton bought for the house were the Big Sur kitchen table and the wishbone chairs. "Such a classic Scandi look," she declares.
