Former broadcast journalist Whitney Casey and model-turned-actress Brooklyn Decker know something you don't. You spend years of your life—10 to be exact—picking out clothes to wear and to pack for all of life's many occasions. After identifying a massive white space in clothing and tech space, Casey and Decker figured out a way to give that precious time back to people with a seriously smart app called Finery.
On Episode 21 of Second Life, the two share how they turned one brilliant idea into a thriving company (without business school or formal training). Casey and Decker are living proof that you can self-educate on just about anything. Pivoting from careers in modeling, acting, and journalism to entrepreneurship doesn't exactly seem like it would be a smooth transition, but this pair of savvy women took the skill sets they acquired from their first jobs, paired those with thoughtful research, and manifested one of those Why didn't we think of this sooner? ideas into a successful business.
"You have to be passionate about something to start a business and you have to be obsessed with something to actually run a business and that's kind of what we became," says Casey. Their obsession? Figuring out what to wear. Finery takes all the clothes you buy online (or ones you manually input) and hangs them up in a digital closet that lives in your phone—a genius idea that helps you plan outfits ahead of time.
How did they do it? Decker attributes their success to relying on each other as business partners. "To be able to have someone to call on to pick up where you left off or really just have a person who's in it with you, I think there's really a value to that," she says. As for Casey, she advises not wasting any time: "Just take the first step," she says.
