Emily Henderson is proof that when you're passionate about something, you can turn it into a thriving career—no matter what you studied in college or where you started out. “I learned on the job and I think it’s a very good way to start and build your career," she tells Hillary Kerr on episode 26 of Second Life. Find out how Henderson went from being a prop stylist to running a design blog and getting her own show on HGTV without any traditional design or business education.
Henderson grew up thinking she would be a teacher like both her parents, but after studying literature and history in school, she didn’t know what she wanted to do. “I realized I wanted to be around pretty things and I didn’t know what that meant," she explains. Living in New York after college, it wasn't long until she discovered prop styling, a job that allowed her to be around those pretty things she dreamed of.
Her career as an interior designer didn’t fully begin until she moved to Los Angeles with her husband. While he pursued acting, she went out on a limb and auditioned for the popular HGTV show Design Star. "I think I just went on to have a story to tell," she jokes. Of course, not only was she cast, she ended up winning the show and her career only took off from there. She's now at the helm of a successful design blog, works with Target as its home style expert, takes on ambitious design projects, and has written a book (with another on the way).
While part of her wishes she had gotten more skills in business and design when she was younger, her passion and positive outlook have carried her this far. Now, she’s focused on being the best boss she can be as she and her team continue completing stunning design projects and sharing them for all to enjoy.
