The key to keeping your mind sharp as you age may not be limited crossword puzzles and reading. According to a study published in The Journals of Gerontology, sexual activity has been associated with cognitive function in older adults. In other words, having a healthy and active sex life can keep your mind at its best.
Researchers studied 73 adults between the ages of 50 and 83. Participants were asked to complete the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-III, a test used to evaluate things like attention, memory, and verbal fluency. They were also asked to indicate if they have sex weekly, monthly, or not at all.
After adjusting the data to take into account factors like age, gender, education, and cardiovascular health, researchers found that the more sex participants reported having, the better they scored on the ACE-III.
This is not the first study to find an association between sexual activity and cognition. In 2016, research published in Oxford Academic was also able to link sex with brain function in older adults. While more research is needed to fully understand the effects of sex on the brain, this study goes to show that sex is a part of any healthy lifestyle, and aging is no reason to take it easy in the bedroom.
