The 2019 Color of the Year Is So '70s (and We're Here for It)

Yet another color of 2019 has landed, and we'll openly admit that it's our favorite prediction so far. Sherwin-Williams has officially proclaimed Cavern Clay as next year's reigning color, and we're all about the earthy terra-cotta hue. Described by the brand as "bohemian, yet refined," the warm color gives a nod to both midcentury-modern style and the soul of the American Southwest, reads a press release.

Considering the humble resurgence of terra-cotta planters, lamps, and ceramics this fall, in addition to the growing popularity of sepia-toned pieces ranging from textiles to vases, it's safe to say that Sherwin-Williams hit the nail on the head with this one. The earthy color also harkens back to the 1970s—aka the decade of the moment in the fashion world. Our sister site Who What Wear even listed "70s Shades of Brown" as one of the fall/winter 2018 fashion trends to know.

It appears that Sherwin-Williams's director of color marketing, Sue Wadden, is on the same page. "We believe 2019 will be a renaissance of the 1970s—with a twist. In the coming year, we will embrace our pioneering spirits and artisan ingenuity," said Wadden in the press release. To her, Cavern Clay "embodies renewal, simplicity and free-spirited, bohemian flair."

HOW TO USE CAVERN CLAY

As far as design goes, the brand sees Cavern Clay functioning as both an interior and exterior paint color that "brings the warmth of the outdoors in," adds Wadden. "Envision beaches, canyons and deserts, and sun-washed late summer afternoons—all of this embodied in one color." Sherwin-Williams recommends pairing the hue with natural furnishings, including exposed floors, wood furniture, leather upholstery, greenery, and worldly textiles, like a southwestern-style rug.

In terms of color palette, Cavern Clay feels right at home with other balanced neutrals like Moth Wing, Dark Clove, or Origami White. For a distinctly 1970s feel, consider pairing Cavern Clay with Distance, a dusty denim blue that will offer a modern twist on the earth-tone color combinations popular in the iconic decade.
