Picking your favorite airline can often feel like picking your favorite dentist—you just have to settle on the lesser evil. (And even if insinuating that airlines are inherently evil feels like a bit of a stretch, the epidemic of disappearing legroom is nothing to scoff at.) Of all the airlines in the country, though, Americans say Southwest is best.
According to AirfareWatchdog's annual travel survey, in which it polled 11,000 fliers, things like full refunds for fare drops, no fees for flight changes, and an abundance of flight deals landed Southwest at the top of the list. Delta and American finished second and third, respectively.
One of the biggest pros of flying Southwest has to be the aforementioned absence of fees for flight changes. Most people’s plans are flexible and subject to change, whereas most airline tickets are not. That Southwest forgoes the standard $200 itinerary-change fee adopted by most airlines in the country is a true testament to its customer-first mission.
Another reason Southwest topped the list is its promise to offer two free checked bags; according to AirfareWatchdog founder George Hobica, no other U.S. airline makes that same promise. Southwest also offers something called the Companion Pass, which allows frequent fliers the opportunity to bring anyone they want on a flight with them, free of charge.
That adherence to deals is another aspect of Southwest’s customer-friendly attitude. By offering an abundance of bargains, which you can discover by following the airline’s Twitter account, Southwest reigns supreme in a space that thrives on budget-conscious offers. See you on board.
