One of America’s most sacred youthful traditions unfolds over the course of one week in March, when college students across the country put away their books, laptops, and tablets for some major rest, relaxation, and, of course, day drinking. That’s right, folks. Spring Break is almost upon us, which means it’s time to explore this year’s top spring break destinations.
While party towns like Cancun and Key West have long been the standard bearers for the kind of reckless debauchery that has come to define Spring Break, we’re here to tell you that there are many more sophisticated ways to go about things as well. Though we’re by no means suggesting that you lower your margarita consumption, we do want to help you diversify your experience by adding a touch of culture and a hint of class. Below, some of the year’s best spring break destinations.
What’s not to love about this Texas capital of cool? From the succulent BBQ joints that dot every corner, to the cozy dive bars that double as live music venues, Austin is simply teeming with cool-kid credibility.
Eat: The lines at Franklin Barbecue are historically long and totally worth it.
Drink: The French bistro vibe at Jules makes it the perfect spot to imbibe freely while feeling elegant at the same time.
What more can you ask for from your spring break destinations than the shimmering beaches that line the coast of Florida’s most seductive city? And if frolicking in South Beach’s azure waters or its steamy nightlife don’t appeal to you, you can always go gallery-hopping in Wynwood, Miami’s burgeoning arts district.
Eat: This Miami institution is one of the world’s great seafood meccas.
Drink: The rumors you’ve heard about The Basement in The Edition Hotel are true. Yes. there’s an indoor ice rink. Yes there’s a bowling alley. And yes this is the place to be.
Nothing says Spring Break destinations like this coastal beach town, whose raucous party scene and endless beaches are ideal for the jet-setting crowd looking to play a round of golf or soak up the sun while taking in some of the world’s most breathtaking backdrops.
Eat: The mouth-watering pizzas at Bar Esquina are rivaled only by its own stunning terrace.
Drink: This ultra exclusive chain Nikki Beach planted its flag in Cabo, and features two massive pools, covered cabanas, and swim-up bars.
No matter what you’re into, L.A. has something for everyone. Spend your days lounging at one of Venice’s plethora of hipper than thou bars and restaurants, or go for a hike through Malibu’s rolling hills and valleys.
Eat: If you can get a table, there’s no better place to see and be seen than Gjelina, Venice’s epicenter of cool. Oh yeah, the food is pretty good, too.
Drink: If star-gazing is your thing, than the stunning garden at West Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont is the place to do it, cocktail in hand.
If you really want to splurge, than why not do it on a picturesque Italian island? As far as spring break destinations go, Capri is admittedly off the beaten path, but once you see those breathtaking views, you’ll know that breaking the bank was well worth it.
Eat: As the oldest restaurant on the island, Ristorante Aurora will give you a splendid side of history that goes perfectly with a plate of spaghetti alle vongole.
Drink: On the beach, of course. After all, you’re in Europe.
