Your days of slinging back tequila shots may be long behind you—most of us leave the shots behind along with those wild college days—but the spirit is so much more than just two ounce pours and frozen margaritas. In fact, good quality tequila is a great option to sip neat, as the MyDomaine team learned at a recent tasting with Tequila Herradura.
Ruben Aceves, the brand's director led us through four of Herradura's options, the classic silver tequila (his favorite to sip before lunch), as well as a Reposado, Añejo, and the Ultra Añejo Cristalino (which was sweeter and well-suited to accompany dessert). After learning how to awaken our taste buds by swirling our first sip around our mouths before swallowing, we got to talking about different ways to use tequila in cocktails.
One thing that stood out to me was the idea of "tequila takes" on cocktails that are traditionally made with different liquors. As someone who tends towards whiskey more often than not, hearing Ruben suggest using Añejo in an Old Fashioned immediately piqued my interest.
And Ruben pointed out that the continued popularity of margaritas is proof that Americans really love the spirit. "We can see that consumers have a preference for tequila as a mixer,” he tells MyDomaine.
So, to open your eyes to different ways to use the liquor, we're sharing a few ideas of classic cocktails that can be made with tequila instead.
