We do not know where we'd be without therapists. Though spilling your deepest, darkest secrets to a stranger—no matter how qualified they are—can be a bit daunting at first, we've been become better and more conscious people because of them.
And while we can sometimes get wrapped up in the chaos of the world and all its uncertainty, there's some kind of solace in knowing that we are not going through it alone, and moreover that people have essentially triumphed over unbelievable hardships since the beginning of time.
>"I've been a therapist for close to 33 years, and although many things have changed, it's remarkable how much has stayed the same," said clinical social worker and psychotherapist Lisa Ferentz in an open letter on MindBodyGreen. "The issues and struggles that brought people into treatment back then are the same issues that bring people into therapy today. Human beings all want to achieve a sense of inner peace and feel content in their lives. They want to see themselves as worthy, competent, and lovable, and they want to be lovingly and respectfully 'seen' by others."
>But above all, Ferentz is endlessly inspired by the endurance of the human spirit. "It never ceases to amaze me that people who have endured emotional, psychological, or physical hardship can still retain a sense of hope and possibility," she affirmed. "How do I know that they've remained hopeful? Because they show up in my waiting room week after week! They keep putting one foot in front of the other."
