After 20 years of working as a food safety attorney, Washington-based Bill Marler has noticed more than a few unsettling trends when it comes to E. coli and salmonella outbreaks. While some culprits on this list are unsurprising, there are more than a few that may cause you to rethink your morning beverage or "healthy" afternoon snack.
According to the Daily Mail, Marler now refuses to eat the following six foods after years of defending victims of foodborne illnesses:
1. Raw oysters
2. Pre-cut fruits and vegetables
3. Raw sprouts
4. Rare meat
5. Uncooked eggs
6. Unpasteurized milk and juices
Marler has allegedly handled "more cases linked to shellfish in the past five years than in the two preceding decades," reports Sadie Whitelocks. He claims this is due to rising water temperatures, which allow for the spread of "harmful microbes" that end up in our food. As for pre-cut fruits and vegetables and bean sprouts—which may surprise some—Marler contends that the more foods are handled and processed, the greater risk they pose.
When dining out, the attorney orders a well-done steak, cooked to 160 degrees Celsius in order to thoroughly kill any and all bacteria. While Marler's strict diet takes a lot of delicacies off the menu, he says he would rather restrict himself than eat something that could make him sick.
