Proven Tricks to Make Your Weekend Seem Longer

We look forward to the weekend all week—these two days of freedom are undeniably wonderful. But oftentimes it feels too short to enjoy. We crash early on Friday night—exhausted from our work week. We get our errands done on Saturday morning and finally get out of the house by nighttime. Come Sunday morning, we already start feeling the anxiety of a looming workweek. More often than not, we find ourselves at home on Sunday night wondering how 48 hours could have possibly flown by when Monday through Friday seemed to drag on forever.

Worry not! We’ve tested five weekend-extension methods and are happy to report that by bedtime on Sunday, we felt rested, ready for the week, and full of memories from our adventurous weekend. The secret lies in smart scheduling to make the most out of each precious hour—all the while getting the essentials done. Make your weekend feel longer with these clever tricks.

Prioritize Friday Night

After work on Friday, make sure you make the most of your evening—go for after-work drinks with friends, have a date night at a hip new restaurant, or at least have a rambunctious night in. Why? After excessive research on our part, we’ve realized that making your big night Friday as opposed to Saturday is ideal. That way you bundle your hangover sleep and tired workweek sleep all in one and don’t let it consume your entire Sunday. That being said, if you can avoid alcohol Saturday night, or just take it extra easy on the cocktails, your Sunday self will thank you. By making your weekend top-heavy on the cocktails side, you can divide your weekend into three stages. Stage one is Friday night, your time to have fun and unwind. Stage two is Saturday, your recovery day. That leaves Sunday for stage three, your productivity/exploration day.

Schedule Your Time

You may be sick of scheduling every minute of your life Monday through Friday, but we guarantee having at least a few things on your weekend calendar makes Saturday and Sunday seem like a lot more than two days. Try a new restaurant in your neighborhood, see a couple different friends for lunch and dinner, sign up for a dance class, or check out the farmers market. Anything that gets you moving around or acting like a local tourist is a great way to elongate the weekend.

Mix Up Your Activities

Don’t just settle for Netflix at home. Instead, try mixing in activities that don't normally show up on your regular schedule. Catch a movie in the theater (or an outdoor screening), go to a concert, visit a museum or a new art gallery, or simply sit at a café and people-watch in a new neighborhood. Mixing up your activities makes it seem like you’ve done a lot more in the weekend than only two days would permit. It also creates new memories that will stay anchored in your mind much longer than your last Netflix binge.

Stretch on Sunday

Taking a candlelit yoga class on Sunday evening, or just stretching at home, is the perfect way to extend your weekend happiness into the coming week, and become extra mindful of the time off we just had. We often notice our shoulders start to creep up to our ears as the light goes down on Sunday evening, but having this healthy ritual as a weekend closer helps release tension and wean us into the Monday morning hustle. In short, it helps us be in the present moment, serves as a light workout, takes our mind off the Sunday Scaries, and prepares our bodies for the week ahead. Win, win, win.

Bathe Before Bed

For your grand finale, consider an indulgent bubble bath complete with bath salts, essential oils, and a cup of calming chamomile tea. This gives you that much-needed “me” time before the crowded week resumes. It’s also the best way to lull yourself into a deep Sunday sleep. After a yoga session and a bubble bath, you'll feel entirely re-energized, de-stressed, and ready to tackle anything Monday might throw at you.
