She's got cool on lock

Updated 09/23/16

We’re thrilled that our favorite online minimalist concept store The Line has finally migrated to the west coast with its brick-and-mortar outpost The Apartment by The Line. Co-founder and executive creative director of The Line, Vanessa Traina, and The Line’s creative director Melanie Glass say that the boutique, located on Melrose Place in West Hollywood, will evolve on a seasonal basis. We’re swooning over the linen sheets by in-house collection Tenfold and all of the other beauty, fashion, and home décor pieces curated by this dream design team. To walk through The Apartment by The Line is to absorb enough interior design inspiration to dream up a new home. In honor of the West Coast opening, we talked to fashion muse and design savant Vanessa Traina about how she manages to live such a glamorous, balanced life. Scroll through for our exclusive interview.

MyDomaine: As executive creative director for The Line, how do you approach building a multifaceted collection of fashion, home, and beauty products each season?

Vanessa Traina: I have an incredible buying team at The Line that keeps growing as we add more categories but I think the most important piece to this puzzle is our focus and edit. We launched the brand with such a distinctive voice that we were able to establish a clear vision early on and with every season it's really about building upon that. We love introducing new designers and brands and continually trying out new product in each category. We go into every market with an open mind trying to imagine what we feel our customer might be craving for the following season.

MD: What prompted you to co-found The Line and how has your vision for the company evolved over time?

VT: I felt the marketplace was completely overwhelming and every site and store was wildly over assorted so it was really my goal to put on my editor's hat and present a well rounded and edited selection of product that told a harmonious story. Over time this vision is naturally evolving and growing as we respond to the customer, take on new designers and adapt to new surroundings with the opening of The Apartment by The Line LA.

MD: Have you developed a morning routine that helps you stay productive throughout the entire day?

VT: I have always been an early bird so I am generally up by 6:30. I answer any lingering emails over a cup of tea, take a nice walk with my dog, have a quick call with my sisters and mother to check in with them and then head into the office by 9.

MD: Do you believe in having a work/life balance and, if so, how do you manage it?

VT: I think that is the key to health and happiness. I love my job but also need to feel fulfilled in my personal life. I try to be out of the office in time for an evening Pilates class and fill my week with dinners catching up with friends. I also try not to work on the weekend when possible and really take that time to replenish myself and my energy. Vacations are also a must!

MD: If you had to pick three home decor pieces from this season's collection at The Line, what would they be?

VT: I hate picking favorites but if I had to then I absolutely love the Tenfold soft stripe cashmere throw, I want to be wrapped in it all winter. The Beni Ourain rugs are fabulous accents for any room and I am also particularly loving all of our Skultuna tabletop goodies like the votive holders and bowl.
