Get the Look of This Dreamy Victorian Kitchen

When a busy Portland family was busting at the seams of their old Victorian house in the Mount Tabor neighborhood of Portland, they knew they needed to expand. Jessica Helgerson and team, including project designer Mira Eng-Goetz, soon intervened; creating an open and airy kitchen by converting part of a sun porch to an interior space and widening openings to the dining room. The result is a comfortable room that serves as the main gathering space for the family. Get the look in your own home by following these guidelines. _1 The color palette of this kitchen is an expertly curated mix of cool grays, balanced by rich wood floors, brass hardware, black accents, and a pop of gold from the velvet sofa; an unexpected, but winning combination. The island is the painted the darkest color in the room, which is fitting as it is in the center and grounds the space. Although testing many colors is the way to find the perfect palette, start with Farrow and Ball's Stiffkey Blue -- it's one of our favorites.

An iron-leg table with mixed chairs provides the perfect spot for casual dining and homework, a velvet sofa is a nice place for parents to relax with a cup of  tea, and the formal dining room is where to go when entertaining. The traditional style of the various seating will keep it all unified .

_3 To get the authentic Victorian look, it's all in the details. Take the subway tile from floor to ceiling for a 19th-century factory feel. Pick practical pendant lights, which are less fussy than chandeliers. And, finally, accent with warm metals; like brass pot racks, copper bin pulls, and iron table bases. These final touches will make any history buff feel right at home.
