Hardly one to follow tradition, fashion designer Virgil Abloh has unveiled his IKEA collaboration ahead of time, via a YouTube live stream. The founder of Off-White and recently named artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton has offered hints about his IKEA line in the past—but none have been as thorough and revealing as the live stream.
So what can we expect from Kanye West's creative confidant? The first item released won't be statement furniture or a big-ticket item—it's a doorstop. "I had this image of an airplane wheel and two chocks to stop it," Abloh says in the video. "The person who designed the chock is equally powerful because it can stop a plane in its tracks."
If you're struggling to wrap your mind around Abloh's doorstop concept, the rest of his furniture line will appeal. "I want to embed an artistic quality in things you already have," he says, noting that the products will be dorm room or first apartment essentials.
Abloh finally revealed the name of the collaboration, too. It's called Markerad, which is Swedish for clear-cut, crisp, and pronounced. So far, we know it'll include chairs, rugs, shoulder bags, display cabinets to "curate your junk drawer," and the aforementioned humble doorstop. Stay tuned for the second reveal in June and shop the full collection this summer.
