We all know the basic essentials to living a long life: Regular exercise, a nutritious diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding cigarettes and excessive alcohol are the simple ingredients to making it to retirement age. However, Health recently shared a list of 16 surprising ways to add years to your life. These habits aren’t the normal activities you would consider to be age-enhancing. For example, did you know that having a dog could extend your shelf life? According to a study published in the journal Circulation, having a dog keeps most owners more active—since they take the dog on regular walks—which results in the owner meeting daily physical activity recommendations. - Have more sex. Having two to three orgasms a week will help you live longer. Why? Sex reduces stress, boosts the body’s immune system, allows you to connect with another person, and can even control one’s appetite.
- Get sound sleep. Establishing a nighttime routine that allows you to sleep at least seven straight hours each night can reduce the risk of premature death.
- Start your morning with coffee. Sipping a cup of coffee decreases your risk of many chronic diseases, like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The key here is not to drink too much. Overdosing on caffeine can trigger insomnia and anxiety.
- Stop sitting so much. Stand more every day, and you’ll live longer.
- Eat lots of fish. In a study performed by Annals of Internal Medicine, the adults with the highest blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish like salmon, trout, and tuna) lived more than two years longer than those with lower levels.
