How 3 Small Changes Can Promote Wellness at Home

A holistic approach to wellness is more than diet, exercise, or taking a bunch of supplements. The process involves creating the most optimal environment for yourself at home too. While this might sound “woo woo,” it is really anything but. Think about it this way: there’s a reason why you feel relaxed at a resort or spa. It’s because the environment is designed to make you feel a certain way.

“When designing a home for my clients, I consider every aspect of how they currently live and how they would like to live or feel,” says interior designer and feng shui specialist Amanda Amato. “Our environments impact our lives and overall well-being. The colors, lighting, furnishings, decor, function, and layout, in our home all play a role in how we feel.”

Here are a few easy ways to design a more wellness-centered home.

Edit Your Stuff—Edit Your Mind

Whether you can recognize it or not, our environments affect how we feel, both positively and negatively. “Negative emotions create stress and tension in our body and show up in a variety of ways such as anxiety, stomach aches, or stiffness in our shoulders to name a few,” says Amato.

She recommends questioning the emotional associations with the objects that you surround yourself with. Does a particular item bring about negative or positive feelings? “Was this item a gift? How is your relationship with that person? Do you feel obligated to keep that item because it was a gift or was passed down?”

Then there’s always the standard Mari Kondo question. Does the item spark joy? If it doesn’t, Amato says it's best to purge.

Don’t Forget About Air Quality

Air quality can have a major impact on health. Amato suggests improving air quality by adding plants. She also says the presence of greenery can decrease stress.

Another way to improve air quality is through an air purifier. Molekule is a state of the art air purifier, both in terms of design and effectiveness. It has a PECO filer, which can destroy pollutants 1000 times smaller than what a HEPA filter, which is the most common type of filter, can. 

Molekule is also light years ahead of similar devices, at least aesthetically. It doesn’t look like an appliance so much as a sleek, modern column or table. It’s on the pricy side ($799), but as someone who has one (and severe allergies), I can personally vouch that it’s a game-changer. 

Molekule recently launched a mini version for half the price. It cleans the air in a 250 square foot radius, so it’s ideal for studio apartments or individual rooms. It’s white and features a grey felt handle, so it’s a bit more contemporary in terms of style.

Use Crystals to Bring About Instant Wellness

Using crystals is a great way to set specific intentions and connect the mind, body, and spirit at home. Media personality and influencer Ali Levine loves using them to create a more peaceful environment. As a mom who is pregnant with her second child, she admits she needs all the help she can get. 

Crystals are a constant visual reminder that she needs to meditate and reconnect with herself. So she keeps them throughout various rooms in her home. “I love to meditate in my room, my bathroom in the bathtub, or downstairs by my fireplace, where I have a large amethyst on the mantel.”

Levine likes to keep rose quartz crystals in her bedroom, as well as in her daughter Amelia’s. It’s the stone of love and encourages you to practice both loving those around you and self-love.
