As it turns out, inflammation is the connecting thread between so many of our everyday ailments. From mild disturbances like acne and bloating to more serious illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis and tuberculosis, inflammation is the underlying culprit. It's no wonder that anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric and ginger tea are popping up on our wellness radar heading into 2017. In fact, Well+Good recently named "inflammation-fighting foods" as the number one wellness trend for 2017, followed by cannabis and plant protein.
"We expect to see the market for inflammation-fighting foods to grow 7 percent by 2020 and expect 2017 to be a big year in terms of new product announcements and continued research and development," Deborah Barrington, a senior editor at Industry Dive, told Well+Good.
Pinterest's partner insights lead, Stephanie Kumar, is in complete agreement, citing a significant spike in Pinterest search for terms like turmeric, turmeric lattes, and ginger tea. Even Starbucks is on board, releasing its first-ever anti-inflammatory Chile Mocha Latte this year.
The gluten-free movement is also a nod to the increasing popularity of anti-inflammatory foods. "It's no coincidence that many healthy food trends—from the zoodle and cauliflower rice to nut milks and vegan cheese—are substitutes for inflammatory ingredients like gluten, grains, and dairy," says Well+Good of its number one pick.
