Nowadays, more and more people not only want to source stylish furnishings and chic décor for their home, but they also want to feel good about the purchases they make. Consumers are taking the environment and the global economy into consideration, and brands are following suit with their initiatives.
West Elm is one of many brands in the design space working to make a more substantial impact and bring beautiful, hand-crafted products to a broader audience. This April, West Elm teamed up with the Atitlán Project to raise $100,000 for non-profit organization Pintando el Cambio Santa Catarina Palopó. Translated to "painting the change of Santa Catarina Palopó," a small town near Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, this initiative funds the transformation through the painting of houses to boost tourism. The goal is to create sustainable income, help break the cycle of poverty, fight poverty, and create more socioeconomic opportunities for artisans. Pintando el Cambio hopes to paint 850 houses this year (70 percent of all homes in the area), each with Mayan-inspired symbols and colors, creating a massive (and Instagrammable) public art installation.
Along with Guatemala-born designer Diego Olivero of Meso Goods and design duo Mitzie Wong and Wendy Wurtzburger of Roar + Rabbit, West Elm launched a limited-edition collection of products available online now. The prints in the collection are inspired by the colors of the houses in Santa Catarina Palopó, the landscapes, including their famous volcanoes, the Mayan religion, and the vibrant people of Guatemala. What's more: 50 percent of the purchase price will support the renewal of Lake Atitlán with Pintando el Cambio Santa Catarina Palopó.
14 works of art for the home titled the Atitlán Project. Each one-of-a-kind lot is handcrafted by artisans and celebrates the vibrant culture + indigenous craft of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. West Elm will donate 100% of the profits to Pintando el Cambio Association
But if you prefer something a bit more unique, 14 one-of-a-kind products handcrafted by artisans of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala will be auctioned on paddle8.com, including shag-covered and tassel-embellished accent chairs. Of these purchases, West Elm will donate 100% of the profits to Pintando el Cambio Association. Finally, if you've hit your furniture-purchasing limit but still want to help the cause, you can also donate directly to the organization on pintandoelcambio.com.
