We all know that soda isn't the healthiest drink of choice—the sugary beverage has been linked to diabetes, weight gain, and even the obesity epidemic. But as The Daily Mail points out, soda affects your body in the short-term as well—within 10 minutes of drinking it. The site references a new infographic developed by The Renegade Pharmacist, a health blog run by former UK pharmacist Niraj Naik. Naik used to help patients get off long-term diabetes medications when he worked as a community pharmacist.
"I created my own system to help my patients where I would write little shopping lists for people based on their conditions," he explained. "My first advice to them would be to do a simple swap, replacing fizzy drinks with water with fresh lemon or lime juice." He noticed that this simple swap would have a dramatic effect on their health. "This indicated to me that fizzy drinks and sugar were big issues relating to blood pressure and metabolic diseases like diabetes and heart disease." Within 10 minutes: The 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system, which is 100% of your recommended daily intake. The phosphoric acid cuts the taste of the sugar so it's not overwhelming.
Within 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, and insulin is released into your bloodstream. Your liver responds by turning sugar into fat.
Within 40 minutes: Your body finishes absorbing the caffeine; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your liver pumps more sugar into your bloodstream. You feel alert and awake. Five minutes later, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers in your brain.
Within 60 minutes and beyond: You'll most likely have to go to the bathroom at this point, which, unfortunately, flushes useful nutrients like calcium, zinc, magnesium, sodium, electrolytes, and water out of your body.
