Age is just a number, but if you’re currently dating a younger man or you're interested in doing so, it’s imperative to understand the six key elements of going younger. Depending on your relationship needs, sexual desires, and realistic expectations for relationships in your 30s or older, dating a younger man can either be an ideal choice or not the best fit. When grappling with the decision of whether or not you're ready to date younger men, consider these six points first.

1. Younger Men Usually Have Different Priorities

When you’re dating a younger man, you may notice that his priorities differ from those of someone older. For instance, a younger man may be working to make a name for himself in his career and therefore spend a lot of time at the office or still be in grad school. On the flip side, an older man may be more established and have the luxury of not spending every moment tied to his desk. And if you’re looking to travel with your partner, a younger man may not be the best option. When you’re dating a younger man, you need to be okay with the fact that the two of you may be in very different stages of your lives.

2. You Will Have a Different Dynamic With Younger Men

For many women who decide to date younger men, they tend to appreciate the fact that they're the ones with more life experience in the relationship. Many women feel empowered dating a younger man and being the more worldly one in the relationship. After all, being a woman in your 40s dating a younger man is the ultimate feminist power play. Older men date younger women all the time and it's hardly frowned upon (and it shouldn't be), but when women do the same thing, society tends to judge them as desperately clinging to their own youth. This, however, isn't the case. If you found a younger man who makes you feel happy, alive, and in love, society will applaud you.

3. Younger Men Can Have Less of a Past

When you’re dating a younger man, you'll probably notice that he has less emotional baggage than an older man would. For example, while an older man may be divorced, have children, or boast a long relationship history, a younger man likely won’t have those same kinds of personal situations. He may have had relationships before, but his sheer youth prevents him from compiling a long list of difficulties, worries, and exes.

4. You May Receive Pushback From Friends and Family

If you find yourself interested in dating younger men, you may receive unfavorable responses from your friends and family. Though you and your younger guy may be totally into each other, others may not be as supportive and open-minded. If you know going in that this negative reaction is a potential reality, then you’ll be better able to handle it and brush it off when it happens. When you're able to ignore rather than internalize the possible disapproving looks or judgments from others, your relationship with a younger guy will be that much stronger.

5. Younger Men Are Generally More Up for Adventure

If you’re looking for a bit more adventure and for someone who has the potential to rock your world in new ways, then dating a younger man is for you. Not only is a younger guy more likely to be in the know about the new and hot happenings in your area, but the activities you engage in together as a couple will likely skew younger and more adventurous than what you're used to. For example, while you may be prone to coffee dates, meeting up for a drink, or going to a staged reading, his idea of a great date may be dirt-biking, rock climbing, or even skydiving. If you’re looking to pump up the adventure levels in your dating life, then seeking out a younger man will work to your advantage.

6. Your Views on Commitment May Differ

If you’re looking for a long-lasting, serious relationship, you may find it more difficult to establish that with a younger guy. While an older man may want to have children and settle down, a younger man may want to keep sowing his wild oats, have an open relationship, and not be into the idea of commitment. If you want to date a younger guy, it’s important to be upfront with him right away and talk about what you want in a relationship. If you’re looking for something light and fun, then having a younger man by your side may be the right decision for you. However, if you’re trying to meet someone who is looking for a committed relationship, you may want to be with someone a bit older who is in the same place you are.
