When you think about the meticulous effort that goes into securing cheap flights, hunting for budget airfare could be considered a hobby. Fortunately, a new report from booking site Hipmunk has done the legwork for us as far as summer 2018 travel is concerned. After deep-diving into Hipmunk's data from previous years, analyst Kelly Soderlund pinpointed the week of April 23 as the best time to book summer 2018 travel to maximize domestic savings.
"You can save up to 12 percent compared to those who wait until mid-june, when booking prices for summer peak," she writes. The average flight price on April 23 is $279, compared to $316 by June 18. "If you miss the April 23 'buy-by' week, the general rule of thumb is to book three weeks in advance of departure for summer flights to save up to 14 percent." April 23 is the winning date for both Memorial Day and Fourth of July travel, with consumers saving 16% and 14% respectively.
Soderlund also identified the cheapest and most expensive days to fly for the entire summer. Saturday, August 25 will be the easiest on your wallet, clocking in at just $224, while flying on Sunday, June 10 is the most expensive at $386.
