Science is serving up some good news for wine lovers. If you're looking to lose weight, it turns out that your favorite indulgence might actually be the solution. While we're aware of the health benefits of drinking red wine, we've been wary of the excess calories it contributes to our daily diets. According to science, however, a nighttime pour of your favorite red might actually be the solution to shedding a few pounds.
Last year, researchers at Washington State University found that wine and weight loss go hand in hand. The study notes that a compound found in red wine called resveteral helps to convert "white fat" into "beige fat," which is easier to burn off. A separate study from 2012 concluded that consuming wine late at night curbs snacking, thereby aiding weight-loss efforts. While the latter study involved bees instead of humans, we remain optimistic about the potentials of our late-night pours of cabernet sauvignon.
Before you get carried away with this scientific discovery, remember that drinking too much red wine can begin to reverse its positive effects. To get your fix of resveratrol without the alcohol, professor Min Du of Washington State suggests snacking on blueberries, strawberries, and, of course, grapes.
