Welcoming a new baby into your family is such an emotionally potent moment—one you simply cannot put a price tag on. Unless, of course, you do. Such is the experience of a new father from South Carolina who recently shared a surprising hospital bill for a labor and delivery service on Reddit. Captioned, "I had to pay $39.35 to hold my baby after he was born," the photo of the bill shows a clearly labeled "skin to skin after c-section" charge, which is but a small fraction of their almost $13,300 bill.
Although the father wasn't necessarily complaining about the charge—he repeatedly expressed gratitude for a healthy delivery—he wasn't shy to express his surprise at seeing that charge on the bill. Fortunately, a labor and delivery nurse on Reddit was able to offer some insight into the situation: "'Skin to skin' in the OR is a relatively new thing and requires a second Labor and Delivery RN to come in to [sic] the OR and make sure the baby is safe," explained user FiftySixer. That being said, FiftySixer also mentioned she did not know they charged extra for this process.
